In a decisive statement at the opening of the 11th session of the Galmudug parliament, the president of the Galmudug regional administration, Mr. Ahmed Adi Kariye, known as Qoor Qoor, emphasized the region's commitment to conducting direct elections. He declared that Galmudug stands ready to facilitate a voting process that allows its citizens to select their leadership.
During his address, Qoor Qoor
reaffirmed the importance of the resolutions from the recent National
Consultative Council meeting, highlighting their implications for the electoral
process. "The National Consultative Council agreed that the country should
hold elections by person and vote. Galmudug is taking its role, and we are
ready to hold elections by person and vote in our region," he stated
firmly.
The president also expressed the
widespread desire among the Somali populace for a transition to direct
elections, emphasizing its feasibility. "The holding of a free election in
Galmudug and the whole country is a great victory for the Somali people, as it
is important to give back the power of the Somali community to elect whoever
they want," Qoor Qoor added.
This announcement comes amid
significant tensions among regional administrations, as Jubbaland and Puntland
have voiced opposition to the National Consultative Council's decisions.
These divisions have raised questions
about the feasibility and fairness of the electoral process, complicating the
path toward direct elections in Somalia.
