President Hassan Sheikh and Chancellor Scholz Discuss Cooperation Between Somalia and Germany
The
President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met with
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today in Berlin to discuss the robust
relationship between their two nations. This meeting was part of President
Hassan Sheikh’s official visit to Germany, following an invitation from
Chancellor Scholz.
The leaders
engaged in comprehensive discussions on various collaborative efforts, focusing
on key areas such as climate change, economic development, and the transition
of security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in
Somalia (ATMIS) to the Somali government. They also addressed the importance of
training and strengthening the Somali Police Force to enhance national
security.
Chancellor
Scholz highlighted Germany’s commitment to supporting refugees and asylum
seekers, noting that the country has become a welcoming haven for many fleeing
conflict, including thousands of Somalis who have successfully integrated into
German society. However, he acknowledged that a small number of Somali
immigrants have faced legal challenges, resulting in the loss of their asylum
rights.
In response,
President Hassan Sheikh expressed gratitude for Germany’s role in providing
opportunities for Somali refugees. He emphasized his government’s commitment to
ensuring that refugees receive their international rights under asylum laws and
clarified that while there should be no forced repatriation, individuals who
have legally lost their asylum status and wish to return home are welcome to do
so.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to enhance cooperation and strengthen the friendly relations between Somalia and Germany, marking a significant step forward in their bilateral partnership.
End.
